Stepping Out of the Shadows: a select history of the Black presence in Sheffield

Join us for a brief history of the Black presence in Sheffield from the 18th – 20th century.

Discover connections between Sheffield and individuals such as Frederick Douglass, Pablo Fanque, Zahreena Khan and Malcolm X.

Learn about the British Black Panthers and the Sheffield branch of the Asian Youth Movement.

Mark Hutchinson is a historian, retired teacher and campaigner. He has for several years led historical city walks that highlight Sheffield’s Black history past particularly from an African-Caribbean perspective.
